Writing, breakdowns, schedules, call sheets and storyboards are free for students, for good. What costs money is table-read audio, because generating speech costs us by the minute. The AI tools on the free plan stay free unless running them outgrows what we can carry; then students share the real cost.

How the student cost share works

Slate OS is built and paid for by a working teacher. If running it costs more than $10.00 a month beyond what school plans and shares bring in, two months running, students without a school plan pay a small, fixed yearly share: $10.00 in high school, $20.00 in college. No more.

  • —What it covers: AI storyboard frames and writing help. Writing, breakdowns, schedules, call sheets and exports stay free regardless — nobody's work is held back over money.
  • —Where it goes: running Slate OS first. Anything left over goes to improving Slate OS, free seats and extra usage for students who need them, and a modest stipend for the teacher who maintains it, shown in the open in the cost ledger.
  • —When: announced at least 30 days ahead, charged once a year, and fixed for the year. A yearly charge, because card fees would eat most of a monthly one.
  • —Who pays: nobody at a school with free access or a school plan. Otherwise the student, or a parent or guardian from a link the student sends — no account needed either way.
  • —Can't pay? Ask for a waiver. It needs no reason, and nobody else can see who has one.
  • —Teachers at public schools: many states don't allow charging students for anything a class requires. If you assign Slate OS, a class plan covers every student, or they can each ask for a waiver.
  • —Students see what things cost as they work — every AI button shows its estimate, and the dashboard shows their month, down to fractions of a cent.

Buying for a school

  • —Quote, W-9 and invoice on request — net 30, no card needed.
  • —Sole-source letter available for districts that require one.
  • —Perkins V and CTE funds may be used for software licences; your district CTE director holds that allocation.
  • —Signed student data privacy agreement on Program and District.
  • —Support is email, next school day. This is built and run by a working teacher.
